Croatian bass-baritone Marko Mimica is one of the most prominent and sought-after soloists of his generation.
Croatian bass-baritone Marko Mimica has established himself as a prominent presence on the international opera stage, with a repertoire spanning from Mozart and bel canto through to Verdi and Wagner. A graduate of the Zagreb Academy of Music, he was selected for the prestigious Young Singers Project at the Salzburg Festival in 2011, marking the beginning of his international career. He subsequently joined the Ensemble of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, where he remained from 2011 to 2016.
In the 2026/27 season, Mimica returns to the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples for the opening production of the season, singing Wurm in Luisa Miller in a new staging by Davide Livermore, conducted by Daniel Oren. He also appears at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma in two productions: Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, conducted by Giacomo Sagripanti and directed by Karole Armitage, and Verdi’s I due Foscari, conducted by Riccardo Frizza in a production by Pier Luigi Pizzi. Further highlights include his role debut as Hunding in Wagner’s Die Walküre at ABAO Bilbao Opera, alongside performances as Lorenzo in Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi at the Wiener Staatsoper, the Gran Teatre del Liceu and the Bratislava Festival. In concert, he opens the season of the Real Orquesta Sinfónica de Sevilla with Verdi’s Requiem.
During the 2025/26 season, Mimica made his debut at the Opéra de Lyon in Les contes d’Hoffmann and returned to the Opéra Royal de Wallonie as Alfonso d’Este in Lucrezia Borgia. His other operatic engagements included Ferrando in Il trovatore at the Teatro Real in Madrid, Wurm in a new production of Luisa Miller at the Wiener Staatsoper, King Marke in Tristan und Isolde at the Teatro Cervantes in Málaga, and Banco in Macbeth at the Hungarian State Opera. His concert engagements included a tour with the Slovak Philharmonic, performances of Verdi’s Requiem in Luxembourg, Valencia, Zagreb and Rijeka, and the official Princess of Asturias Awards concert, attended by Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain, where he performed Dvořák’s Te Deum.
Mimica has appeared at many of the world’s leading opera houses, including the Opéra national de Paris, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the Wiener Staatsoper, the Staatsoper Berlin, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Teatro Real, the Gran Teatre del Liceu, the Dutch National Opera, the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, the Teatro di San Carlo, the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía, the Teatro Regio di Torino, the Teatro Regio di Parma, the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, the Teatro Massimo di Palermo, the Semperoper Dresden, the Opéra de Lyon, the Opéra Royal de Wallonie, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Opera Australia, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, ABAO Bilbao Opera and the Royal Opera House Muscat.
His festival appearances include the Salzburg Festival, the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, the Arena di Verona, the BBC Proms, the Edinburgh International Festival and the Tsinandali Festival. As a concert artist, he has performed at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Carnegie Hall in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the Philharmonie Berlin, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, the Philharmonie Luxembourg, the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid and the Auditorium Rai in Turin.
Mimica has collaborated with conductors including Gianandrea Noseda, Donald Runnicles, Daniel Oren, Michele Mariotti, Maurizio Benini, Riccardo Frizza, Nicola Luisotti, Marco Armiliato, Roberto Abbado and Francesco Ivan Ciampa. He has worked with stage directors including Robert Carsen, Claus Guth, Willy Decker, Christof Loy, David Alden, Calixto Bieito, Damiano Michieletto, Emma Dante and Pier Luigi Pizzi.
