The Orquesta Sinfónica del Principado de Asturias (OSPA) has announced Nuno Coelho’s contract extension as Music Director the for the next two seasons, extending his tenure until June 2027.
The decision, made by the institution’s Governing Board in December 2024, comes during Coelho's third season leading the OSPA—a period marked by major artistic milestones including ambitious programming featuring core symphonic repertoire such as Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique and Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, alongside several world and national premieres. These performances have also showcased an international roster of renowned soloists and guest conductors, developing the institutions’ artistic reputation.
As part of Coelho’s artistic and strategic vision, the OSPA has expanded its presence both within and beyond Asturias, with performances at prestigious venues and festivals including the Festival Internacional de Santander and the Bal y Gay Festival. In parallel, the OSPA has deepened its commitment to social and educational outreach through initiatives that include collaborations with various music and dance conservatories and the organization of the International Orchestral Conducting Masterclass. These efforts have reinforced its role as a cultural agent and expanded its role as a cultural and educational ambassador.

Nuno Coelho combines his work with the OSPA with an increasingly prominent international career collaborating with prestigious ensembles such as the Minnesota Orchestra, Koniniklijk Concertgebouw Orkest and Radio Filharmonisch Orkest in Amsterdam, Hr- Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt, Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Gulbenkian, Orquestra Sinfônica de São Paulo, Tampere Philharmonic, Stavanger Symphony, BBC Scottish Symphony, Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège, Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música, Uppsala Chamber Orchestra, Adealide Symphony, Sinfónica de Trondheim, Orquesta de Radiotelevisión Española, Real Orquesta Sinfónica de Sevilla and Orquesta Sinfónica de Bilbao.
In the operatic field, Nuno Coelho has conducted productions of La Traviata, Cavalleria Rusticana, Manon, and Rusalka, and will return to the Oviedo Opera in 2026 to conduct Manon Lescaut.
