Fourth Prize and RTBF Audience Award winner at the 2026 Queen Elisabeth Cello Competition, he has been praised by critics for his “ideal blend of inspiration and mastery” and “fascinating, deeply rooted musical force and interpretative intensity”, establishing him as one of the leading cellists of his generation.
He has performed as a soloist with orchestras, including the Belgian National Orchestra, the RTVE Symphony Orchestra, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, the Kölner Kammerorchester, the Royal Symphony Orchestra of Seville, the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie and the Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Anthony Hermus, Christoph Poppen, Shiyeon Sung, Vahan Mardirossian, Josep Planells and Edmon Levon.
His performances have taken him to renowned venues such as BOZAR in Brussels, the National Auditorium of Music in Madrid, the Kölner Philharmonie, Concertgebouw Brugge, the Koningin Elisabethzaal in Antwerp, Teatro Monumental in Madrid, Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville, Flagey Studio 4, the Manuel de Falla Auditorium in Granada, the Cantabria Festival Palace, ADDA in Alicante and the Auditorium of Galicia.
Deeply committed to chamber music, he has been a member of the Arriaga Quartet, formed at the Reina Sofía School of Music, since 2023. He has collaborated with internationally acclaimed musicians, including Milana Chernyavska, Pablo Barragán, Christoph Poppen, Silke Avenhaus and Alexei Ogrintchouk.
He has also been invited to perform at leading concert series and festivals, including Musiq3, Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad, the Santander International Festival, Generación Ascendente at the Reina Sofía School of Music in the National Auditorium, the Festival de l’Été Mosan, the Marvão Academy, Musikakademie Nitzow, the MUSEG Festival and the Spanish Music Festival of Cádiz.
Lozano is distinguished by his stylistic versatility, with a repertoire spanning from the Baroque to contemporary music and including numerous premieres. His solo repertoire encompasses some of the major cello concertos, including those by Elgar, Dvořák and Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, and works by Haydn, Kraft and Boccherini. He has also performed works by Johan de Meij, Karl Amadeus Hartmann and Fang Man, whose composition he premiered during the final of the Queen Elisabeth Competition.
Born in Málaga in 2006 into a family of musicians, Álvaro began studying the cello with Carmen Mª Elena and Sabrina Rui. He subsequently continued his training with Pavel Gomziakov at the Barenboim-Said Foundation in Seville and with Asier Polo. Since 2023, he has been studying at the Reina Sofía School of Music in Madrid with Jens Peter Maintz and Fernando Arias.
Álvaro is supported by the Málaga Foundation and receives a scholarship from the Albéniz Foundation and Grupo Planeta at the Reina Sofía School of Music.
He currently plays a 1716 Cristofori cello on loan from the Stretton Society.
