Biography

Chief Conductor and Artistic Advisor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra since 2022, and Music Director of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra since 2019, Spanish conductor Jaime Martín will become Music Director Laureate of LACO from the 2027/28 season. He has also held the positions of Chief Conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland (2019–2024), Principal Guest Conductor of the Orquesta y Coro Nacionales de España (Spanish National Orchestra) (2022–2024) and Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of Gävle Symphony Orchestra (2013–2022). In 2024, Martín became Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

Among the highlights of recent seasons was Martín’s critically acclaimed conducting debut at the BBC Proms with BBC NOW. He also led the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in an 11-day Beethoven Festival, conducting all nine symphonies, followed by a UK and European tour beginning at the Edinburgh International Festival and concluding at the BBC Proms, with an appearance at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg.

The 2026/27 season sees Martín make his conducting debuts with the Minnesota and Milwaukee Symphony Orchestras, alongside appearances with the Dallas Symphony, Strasbourg Philharmonic, Gothenburg Symphony, Gävle Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National Bordeaux-Aquitaine, Orquesta de Valencia, Orquesta de Barcelona y Nacional de Catalunya, and JONDE (Joven Orquesta Nacional de España). He also returns to the London Philharmonic Orchestra in March 2027 to conduct Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez with guitarist Rafael Aguirre and Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía.

Martín has conducted leading orchestras worldwide, including the Dresden Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and Philharmonia Orchestra. He has worked with soloists including Anne-Sophie von Otter, Joshua Bell, Pinchas Zukerman, Christian Tetzlaff and Viktoria Mullova, and commissioned works by composers including Ellen Reid, Andrew Norman, Missy Mazzoli and Juan Pablo Contreras.

As a flautist, Martín was principal flute of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, English National Opera, Academy of St Martin in the Fields and London Philharmonic Orchestra. He turned to conducting full-time in 2013 and was a founding member of the Orquestra de Cadaqués. He is Artistic Advisor and previous Artistic Director of the Santander Festival.
