Biography

Chilean bass-baritone Ricardo Seguel stands out as one of the most versatile and charismatic artists on the international opera scene. Trained at the Sala Lírica Comunal in Concepción, he made his debut in 2002 in La Traviata at the Teatro Municipal de Santiago, where he began a distinguished career appearing in productions of Nabucco, Tristan und Isolde, Eugene Onegin, Tosca, Rigoletto, Lohengrin, Dialogues des Carmélites, Thaïs, Lakmé, Les Pêcheurs de Perles, Carmen, La Bohème (Marcello), Madama Butterfly (Sharpless), and Simon Boccanegra (Paolo).

In 2006, his debut as Leporello in Don Giovanni marked a turning point in his career, establishing him as a performer of great stage talent within the buffo repertoire. Since then, he has excelled in roles such as Don Bartolo and Don Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Selim (Il turco in Italia), Alidoro (La Cenerentola), Don Profondo and the Barone di Trombonok (Il viaggio a Reims), Mustafà (L’italiana in Algeri), Don Pasquale, Dulcamara (L’elisir d’amore), and Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro), among others.

He has performed at leading venues including the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Teatro Municipal de Santiago, Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia, Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, Teatro São Carlos in Lisbon, Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville, Teatro Cervantes in Málaga, Teatro Argentino de La Plata, ABAO in Bilbao, Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo, SODRE in Montevideo, and the Ópera de Tenerife, among others. His international presence includes the Rossini Festival in Wildbad –where he recorded the operas Matilde di Shabran (as Ginardo) and La Accademia di Musica for NAXOS, – as well as the Glyndebourne Festival, where he triumphed in the title role of Don Pasquale in Mariame Clément’s acclaimed production. He has also appeared at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, performing L’italiana in Algeri with the Orchestra Settecento under Giancarlo Andretta—a recording released by GLOSSA.

Recent highlights of Ricardo Seguel’s career include his debut as Gianni Schicchi at the Teatro Colón, his portrayal of Geronio (Il turco in Italia) also at Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Don Bartolo (Le nozze di Figaro) at the Teatro Cervantes in Málaga, and performances as Don Pasquale and the Barone di Trombonok (Il viaggio a Reims) at the Teatro Municipal de Santiago.

Throughout his career, he has collaborated with renowned conductors such as Evelino Pidò, Michele Mariotti, Ottavio Dantone, Maurizio Benini, José Miguel Pérez-Sierra, Iván López-Reynoso, Yves Abel, and Jordi Bernàcer. His work with stage directors includes productions by Emilio Sagi, Mariame Clément, Marcelo Lombardero, Joan Font (Els Comediants), Nicola Berloffa, Joan Anton Rechi, and Guy Joosten, among others.

Recognized for his refined musicality, vocal sophistication, and charismatic stage presence, Ricardo Seguel has earned acclaim from both audiences and critics alike. His artistry was distinguished with the Chilean Art Critics Circle Award (2010) for Don Pasquale and the Outstanding Figure Award (2011) from Sábado magazine of El Mercurio newspaper.
