Lucía Iglesias makes her debut at ABAO as Sophie in Massenet's 'Werther'
13th January 2026

Galician soprano Lucía Iglesias makes her debut at ABAO Bilbao Opera to play the role of Sophie in Jules Massenet's famous opera Werther, which will premiere on January 17 and run until January 26 at the Euskalduna Palace.

Massenet's work occupies an important place in the soprano's career, as her vocation for singing was awakened at the age of eight when she participated in a production of Werther at the Mozart Festival in A Coruña. It was then that she decided she wanted to devote herself to opera. Now, 17 years later, she will play the lead soprano role in Werther alongside a predominantly Spanish cast and the Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa under the baton of Carlo Montanaro. The production is by the Teatro Comunale di Bologna and the stage direction is by Rosetta Cucchi.

Her 25/26 season includes important performances, such as a new production of The Magic Flute that will take her to the Teatro de la Maestranza and the Real Teatro del Retiro in the leading role of Pamina, and her debut at the Teatro Segura in Lima with the production of La púrpura de la rosa, in the leading role of Venus, as part of the Ópera Latinoamérica (OLA) congress.
